Donna Angelle & The Zydeco Posse

IT’S BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE DONNA AND THE BAND PLAYED AT HIGHWAY 99, BUT THEY ARE COMING BACK TO THE NORTHWEST FOR A SHORT SUMMER TOUR.  ONE OF THE MOST SOULFUL, AUTHENTIC ZYDECO ACTS AROUND, DONNA IS TRULY A GEM WHEN IT COMES TO ZYDECO MUSIC.

She was born Donna Charles on October 10, 1951. When Donna was just eight years of age, her parents noticed her interest in, and talent for music. While in seventh grade, Donna joined the Carver High School band in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Encouraged by her music teacher, she learned to play the clarinet, saxophone, viola, and flute. In 1970 Donna began her professional music career playing keyboard for the artist, Bobby Price. A year later she moved on to work with Cosmic Sky, one of the hottest regional groups at the time. Donna's music was influenced by the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Gladys Knight, and various artists who were making appearances on Soul Train and American Bandstand.

Due to her musical leadership abilities, Donna was able to form her own group, which she named Chapter IV, after a verse in the Bible. Soon after, she and her band were performing seven nights a week. These one-night performances took them all over Louisiana to parts of Texas, Alabama, and New Mexico. During this time, Donna experienced problems with bass players, prompting her to master the instrument herself. This newly gained skill afforded her the opportunity of playing bass guitar for artists such as Barbara Lynn and Archie Bell.

Donna's musical momentum was brought to a sudden halt when she was involved in a serious car accident. The injuries Donna sustained in the accident sidelined her career, keeping her out of the music business for several years. Equipped with a strong will and desire to continue her career, Donna met the challenge of overcoming the obstacles imposed by her injuries and in 1994 formed another band. This time Donna showcased a variety of styles such as Zydeco, Oldie Soul, and Hip-Hop.

Shortly after her return to the music circuit, Donna met with Mike Lachney of Bad Weather Productions. Mike Lachney, who produced several Zydeco artists including John Delafose, Rosie Ledet, Pee Wee and the Boll Weevils, and Lady T., was impressed by Donna's soulful sound and signed her to his label. Donna, Mike, collaborated on material for Donna's first recording, a cassette released in May 1995. This recording titled Zydeco Soul , featured hits of the 60's and 70's with a touch of Zydeco.

Early in 1997, Mike brought Donna to the attention of Floyd Soileau, owner of the Maison Soul record label. They immediately went to work on Donna's second release titled Old Man's Sweetheart. Radio stations all across the southeast were playing this CD. The release of Old Man's Sweetheart opened a new chapter for Donna, making her a strong contender and bringing her to the forefront of the Zydeco circuit.

Donna's third CD, Down the Bayou was released in December 1999. It immediately received airplay in other states, as well as in Louisiana. In Louisiana, the track titled Zydeco Man was the most requested track from the CD. Down the Bayou showcases Donna's accordion playing skills. The CD contains a few R&B tracks and a lot more traditional tunes that send Zydeco dancers straight to the dance floor.

The CD, It's Alright , released in 2001 under the J&S record label was Donna's fourth. The attention received from TV and radio stations has been a milestone for Donna. Her accordion and vocal skills are undeniable. Donna Angelle is a hardworking musician who makes her presence known wherever she performs. This Zydeco Diva is definitely on the rise.

Donna 5th CD Workin it was released in 2006 under the producer Mark Miller, Master Track Records. Workin It has earned a 5 out of 5 peppers from Zydeco Roads out of New York City.

Following her return from her tour in Europe, Donna and Manager Mary Duncan collaborated and recently finished her 6th CD titled “Guaranteed Lover”. This CD is definitely guaranteed to get you on your feet and into the groove. It contains a few R & B tracks with a majority of Zydeco tunes that will
